Multitude Monday - February 8, 2010

Super Bowl Sunday

Did you really think I was just going to sit there at watch football?

Bowl-a-Mat in Black and White

Tonight was disco night at the Bowl-a-Mat. Loud tunes, lots of 7th graders, flashing lights. A disco ball.

We donned those awesome tattered patchwork shoes and took a couple bowls with our dear friends and faithful bowling buddies.

I tried to stay focused on the game. I really did. But the lines and angles of the place were just begging for my attention. Luckily, conditions were perfect for a little black and white photography.

Tag-Ball Beauty

Yesterday at school, my boys were gearing up to play "tag-ball", their recent game of choice that seems to be a cross between tag and dodgeball.  We quickly realized that our "tag ball" court has been over run with a large ice flow. My quick thinking and industrious young men didn't miss a beat.  They thought of a great way of creating a new boundary line.

Chunks of ice were gathered and carefully placed in a line down our hill.

The afternoon sun lit this artful sculpture from behind. A beautiful line of glowing ice; it was quite spectacular! Perhaps next week I'll teach the boys about one of my favorite environmental/modern artists, Andy Goldsworthy.  Check this out.

Valentine's Banner

Valentine's day is generally not a holiday that I decorate much for, but it only takes a moment to create a simple festive banner for the fireplace.

Ribbon, scraps of love-colored paper cut into hearts, some words of love by the author of love.

Gentle reminders of the truest love now don the mantle in Sea Kettle.

Are you decorating for Valentines?

in the studio ....

Sometimes after an often hectic day of teaching a multitude of energetic boys (whom I love), I get to come home to quietly (emphasis on quiet) teach a couple of very dear children how to paint.

We carefully take out brushes and tubes.  We adjust our easels.  A little yellow and a little blue.  How do you make gray, again?  We mix and test it on the canvas.  We play soft music proclaiming truth.  We look.  And look again.  Adjust. Paint. Repaint.  It's a calm, curious, silent study.

And just look at what beauty they are creating!
